The pivotal years that shaped Melissa’s legal career were the 7 years she dedicated to working as a Guardian ad Litem (GAL) for the Cook County Public Guardian’s Office, representing abused and neglected children (DCFS Wards). It was during this time that her passion and unwavering commitment to children and families within the legal system flourished.

Melissa completed her law degree at The John Marshall Law School in 2008. Shortly thereafter, she embarked on her professional journey with the Cook County Public Guardian’s Office. After devoting 7 years of her life to public service and advocating for the welfare of children in DCFS care, Melissa made the decision to venture into Family Law. In 2015, she joined Sullivan Taylor and Gumina, where she specialized in family law, child law, adoption, DCFS cases, and GAL work. Later, in 2018, Melissa became part of Mulyk Laho, LLC, focusing on similar areas of practice. Finally, in February 2021, Melissa established Kuffel Law, LLC.

Melissa is deeply involved in her community, holding the position of President for the Dupage Association of Women Lawyers (D.A.W.L.) and serving as a board member of the Kendall County Bar Association. Additionally, she actively participates in the Hearing Board for the Attorney Registration and Discipline Committee (ARDC) and previously served as the Child Advocacy Chair in DuPage County in 2019. Melissa also volunteers her time for Meals on Wheels.

Furthermore, Melissa contributes to the legal community through presentations, including speaking engagements at the DCBA Diversity Symposium, and by publishing articles on understanding the operations of DCFS and navigating DCFS Appeals. Her professional achievements were recognized when she was nominated as a Super Lawyer’s Rising Star in 2021 and 2022.
