the central Philosophy for me is to do
right by the client that involves a lot
of different things being responsive to
the client is the first thing so when my
clients give me a phone call my goal is
always at least return the phone call by
the end of the day that makes the client
feel uh like they are uh being heard uh
even if uh you know we’re working really
hard on the case they don’t get to see
all the time time what all is being done
so uh when we pay the client attention I
think that that’s an important part of
being their representative doing right
by the client of course means working
hard U but sometimes it means uh telling
the hard truths as well oftentimes
things don’t go the way we want them to
within the case and it’s important to be
upfront and honest with the client uh
when that happens but finally at the end
of the day what we want to do in every
case is achieve a good result for the
client and if we’re able to uh obtain
the compensation that the client
deserves or uh some other preferable
result than that is the ultimate goal in
doing right by the
client sure well a great example is in
the last 10 days I’ve had three
different continuing legal educ
education seminars two of which were at
uh the South Carolina bar convention
this past weekend and one of which was
was at the University of South Carolina
law school it’s uh timec consuming uh to
engage in those sorts of seminars and
presentations but it’s rewarding both in
that I’m able to make new friends uh
within the profession and uh you know
educate other lawyers and educate myself
uh even more as I’m preparing uh for
those types of of presentations I also
enjoy writing for our uh uh attorney’s
trade bulletin which is called well the
South Carolina Association for Justice
bulletin and I’ve edited uh that
magazine for several years as well it’s
uh not necessarily something that drives
a lot of business our way uh I think it
does from time to time but it’s uh very
rewarding for me uh academically

Columbia, SC personal injury attorney Graham Newman talks about the philosophy that guides his work and his scholarly work. He indicates that his central philosophy is simple: always do right by the client. For him, this principle carries several responsibilities. First and foremost, he prioritizes responsiveness. When clients call, his goal is to return the call by the end of the day. Even if much of the work on a case happens behind the scenes, prompt communication assures clients that they are being heard and that their concerns matter.

Doing right by the client also means working tirelessly on their behalf, but it is not limited to effort alone. It often requires candor—being upfront and honest when a case takes an unexpected turn. He emphasizes that part of effective representation is delivering the hard truths, ensuring that clients fully understand their situation. Ultimately, his objective in every matter is to achieve a meaningful result, whether that be securing just compensation or reaching another favorable resolution.

Beyond direct casework, he remains deeply engaged in professional development and the broader legal community. Within the last ten days alone, he has participated in three continuing legal education seminars—two at the South Carolina Bar Convention and one at the University of South Carolina School of Law. While preparing and presenting for such programs is time-consuming, he finds the experience rewarding. It allows him not only to share insights and contribute to the education of other lawyers but also to sharpen his own knowledge.

He also invests in the legal profession through writing and editing. For several years, he has served as an editor for the South Carolina Association for Justice bulletin, the trade publication for attorneys in the state. Though such work may not directly generate significant business, he values it as an academically enriching endeavor and an opportunity to foster stronger connections within the profession.
