You know, I have a little sign on the fridge in our office. I have two little signs. One says, “I think I can. I think I can. I think I can.” And the other one says, “Every person can make a difference and everyone should try.” And that’s kind of what we do as lawyers. Somebody comes in with an idea that they want to bring from Point A to Point B, maybe it’s a new business and they want to figure out how to hire lawyers – excuse me, to hire employees, a way that creates good relationships. So, people come in with I think I can ideas and we help bring them to reality.

And others come in with, “Oh my gosh. I’m in my most challenging circumstance.” And many people think only individuals are in challenging circumstances. It’s hard to be sued. It is not fun. Or to be accused of doing something illegal, and those are really challenging circumstances. So, we can make a difference in those challenging circumstances. And I used to think I can change the world, and I can’t. But what I can do is help people in their most challenging circumstance one at a time and make a positive difference in their lives.

Minneapolis and St. Cloud attorney Sheila Engelmeier discusses why she enjoys being a lawyer. She shared that she keeps two inspirational signs on the refrigerator in her office. One reads, “I think I can. I think I can. I think I can,” while the other says, “Every person can make a difference and everyone should try.” She explained that these messages reflect her philosophy as a lawyer, as she believes her role is to help people turn their ideas into reality, whether they are starting a new business, building positive relationships with employees, or pursuing other meaningful goals.

She also explained that many clients seek legal assistance during the most difficult moments of their lives. While people often assume that only individuals experience hardship, she pointed out that employers also face significant challenges, such as being sued or accused of illegal conduct. She emphasized that lawyers have the opportunity to make a meaningful difference by helping clients navigate these difficult situations with guidance and support.

She reflected that she once believed she could change the world, but over time realized that her true impact comes from helping one person at a time. By assisting clients through their most challenging circumstances, she strives to make a positive difference in their lives. She believes that every individual has the ability to create meaningful change, and that lawyers fulfill this purpose by helping others overcome obstacles and achieve their goals.
