00:04
we’re all experienced patent attorneys
00:06
in our firm every every partner
00:09
we only have partners in our firm
00:11
but we previously were partners in big
00:13
prestigious firms
00:15
but we work our cases personally we
00:17
couldn’t do that at a big firm because
00:19
there’d be pressure to push the work
00:21
down to junior associates and so some
00:25
analysis and some decisions would be
00:27
made by inexperienced attorneys
00:29
in that type of a scenario so we like to
00:32
practice law not manage other attorneys
00:35
who are practicing
00:36
so that makes a big difference in the
00:38
outcomes we’re not leveraged and
00:42
but we’ve got the sophistication of uh
00:44
big law firms and the experience that
00:47
comes with that combined with personal
00:49
attention
00:50
so we operate on a much smaller scale
00:53
and as a result we have to be selective
00:55
about the cases and the clients that we
00:57
take

Washington, D.C. intellectual property lawyer Kevin Laurence shares why he’s been so successful in AIA trials. He explains that every attorney in the firm is a seasoned patent lawyer—and every one of them is a partner. Each previously held a partnership at a large, prestigious firm before choosing to build a practice where they could work directly on their cases.

At large firms, he notes, there is often pressure to delegate substantial portions of work to junior associates, which can lead to critical analyses and decisions being made by less experienced attorneys. His firm was founded on a different philosophy: they prefer to practice law themselves, not just manage others who do.

This hands-on approach, he says, makes a significant difference in the quality of their work and the outcomes they achieve. The firm isn’t built on leverage, but rather on expertise and collaboration. They combine the sophistication and depth of experience found in major law firms with the personal attention and accountability of a smaller, more focused practice.

Because of their structure, they operate on a more selective scale, choosing their cases and clients carefully to ensure that every matter receives the level of attention and strategic insight that defines their approach.
