San Francisco, CA immigration attorney Michelle Malison discusses what makes an F-1 student eligible for the 24-Month STEM OPT Work Authorization Extension.  She explains that a student in F1 status who is currently on their Optional Practical Training (OPT) may have the opportunity to extend their work authorization for an additional 24 months, provided they meet specific eligibility criteria. Firstly, they must hold an eligible STEM degree from an accredited U.S. institution. Additionally, they must have a job offer from an employer registered in the E-Verify system. The student should have utilized 90 days or less of authorized unemployment during their OPT period.

If these eligibility requirements are met, the student can collaborate with their employer to develop a comprehensive training plan, which needs to be submitted to their designated School Official (DSO) at their educational institution. Subsequently, they must file an application, including a request for an Employment Authorization Document (EAD), with the USCIS before the expiration of their current EAD.
