Most doctors miss cauda equina syndrome because they don’t recognize and put the puzzle pieces together on
what are the red flag symptoms of katada.
Most patients who are in the beginning stages of kataquinina syndrome present to either their primary care physician or the emergency room with low back pain. But low back pain is very common.
Cauda equina will also present with a constellation of other symptoms. For instance, the patient will be
experiencing an inability to uh void or they’ll have urinary retention. They’ll have numbness in the saddle area.
They’ll have intractable lower back pain. They’ll have numbness in their uh either one side or both sides of their
buttocks or their legs. And the the physicians that treat that won’t put the pieces together and they will attribute
it to just low back pain or sciatica when it’s actually something far more sinister and something that is really uh
needs to be urgently decompressed by a surgeon. And those concerns will be dismissed until the patient’s symptoms
become really too loud to ignore. Um but unfortunately sometimes when that happens it’s already too late to fix the problem.
