a whistleblower lawsuit is when an
employee raises a concern to an employer
about suspected illegal activity or
suspected unlawful activity and says
“Hey you know what I don’t think that
this complies with the law.” Or “Hey I
think we might be running close to law
here We should look at that.” and the
employer instead of being grateful and
saying “Okay hey thanks for letting me
know Let’s check that out.” Instead of
doing that they fire the employee There
are so many good remedies that we have
here in Minnesota It takes a lot of guts
and a lot of courage for someone to step
forward at their job and say when things
aren’t being done being done right it’s
pretty easy to go along to get along I
mean that’s I think all of us have that
part of that in us But for someone to
step out of that and say you know you
know what This this isn’t right This
doesn’t feel right We might hurt someone
here We might hurt someone at the plant
This isn’t safe We might hurt someone in
the public That takes a lot of guts And
so the law protects people like that
because that those people actually help
all of us as a community And so if an
employer retaliates against that
employee by firing them then that
employee has a whistleblower lawsuit

Minneapolis, MN employment law attorney Ashwin Madia talks about whistleblower lawsuits. He explains that a whistleblower lawsuit occurs when an employee raises concerns with their employer about suspected illegal or unlawful activity. The employee may point out that certain actions do not comply with the law or suggest that practices should be reviewed to ensure safety and legality. If the employer responds by retaliating—such as terminating the employee—instead of addressing the concern, the employee may have grounds for a whistleblower claim.

He emphasizes that coming forward in such situations requires significant courage, as it is often easier to remain silent and “go along to get along.” Employees who speak up help protect coworkers, the public, and the broader community by preventing potential harm. Minnesota law recognizes the importance of this role and provides strong protections and remedies for employees who face retaliation for acting as whistleblowers.
