Every attorney at Wexler-Becker has handled a variety of complex property issues. Those issues include how to handle taxes, including significant back tax obligations that the parties may have, how to deal with and allocate business interests, people frequently bring closely held businesses to their divorce, and those can be hard to value, and hard to deal with.

We’ve dealt with complex real estate issues, both the family homes that people own, which is often a significant part of their overall marital estate, and business property that they may own in the state or even internationally, figuring out how to value and allocate pensions and retirement accounts can be difficult. That involves dealing with tax issues, as well, because cashing out retirement accounts can have big tax issues that people need to be aware of.

Personal property with sentimental value, art collections, jewelry, all sorts of property that can be very difficult to value, difficult to find, difficult to deal with, and of course, stock and investments. Stock and investment accounts can go up and down quite a bit; they can be hard to deal with in terms of the tax consequences, and hard to figure out a fair way to divide them.

And that’s just a small sampling of the kinds of property issues we deal with in resolving divorce cases.

Seattle, WA family law attorney Michael Louden talks about the types of complex property issues he deals with in his practice.
