00:02
in the spring of 2018
00:06
my law firm received a telephone call
00:09
from a woman who was speaking Portuguese
00:12
and hysterically crying trying to
00:15
explain to us that she had entered the
00:18
United States over the border in from
00:21
Mexico and that her child had been
00:23
removed from her arms and put into a
00:27
cage-like structure where she could see
00:29
the child but she wasn’t allowed to talk
00:31
to him and she certainly couldn’t touch
00:33
him and when she woke up the next
00:35
morning he and all the other children
00:37
were gone and nobody could tell her
00:39
where her son was she told us that she
00:44
was out of her mind
00:45
trying to find her son and that she had
00:48
been flown here to Massachusetts against
00:51
her will she insisted to the authorities
00:53
that she was not leaving Texas until she
00:55
knew where her son was and they said
00:58
that they also didn’t know where he was
01:00
and that she would be flying to
01:02
Massachusetts because she had a distant
01:04
relative here in Massachusetts and when
01:07
she got off the plane one of the first
01:09
calls she made was to my law firm
01:11
evidently she had received the name of
01:15
my law firm from a friend before she
01:18
even arrived in the United States and so
01:21
she called and we were in shock of
01:23
course we had been reading about the
01:25
president’s separation of parents and
01:27
children and feeling terrible about it
01:29
not sure how we were going to be able to
01:31
help and suddenly here was a woman
01:34
asking for help we quickly mobilized and
01:37
I assigned two lawyers and one paralegal
01:39
who spoke Portuguese full-time to help
01:42
this woman and over the course of just
01:45
one week we were able to help her locate
01:48
the child contact the government
01:50
authorities and when they refused to
01:52
release the child at our expense we flew
01:56
the one lawyer and a paralegal to
01:58
Chicago where the child was being held
02:00
we filed lawsuit in federal court in
02:03
Chicago and not 24 hours later a federal
02:07
judge for the first time reunited a
02:10
parent and child forcing the government
02:13
to
02:13
the child it was very exciting and very
02:16
gratifying before we could turn around
02:19
we were inundated with calls from not
02:22
just the media but other mothers and
02:24
fathers who have been separated from
02:26
their children and within the next five
02:28
months we successfully helped reunite 11
02:31
parents with their children I drank that
02:34
as the most interesting exciting and
02:37
gratifying moments of my career

Cambridge, MA immigration lawyer Jeff Goldman talks about a powerful case in which his firm was able to reunite a mother and her child who were separated upon arriving in the United States. He shares that in the spring of 2018, his law firm received a frantic phone call from a Portuguese-speaking woman who was hysterically crying. She explained that she had crossed into the United States from Mexico and that her child had been taken from her arms and placed in a cage-like structure. She could see the child but was not allowed to speak to or touch him. When she woke the next morning, her son and all the other children were gone, and no one could tell her where he was.

She described being desperate to find her son, and that she had been flown to Massachusetts against her will. She had insisted to authorities in Texas that she would not leave until she knew her child’s location, but they claimed they did not know. Once in Massachusetts, she immediately called his law firm—apparently having been given the firm’s name by a friend before even arriving in the United States.

He and his team were shocked and deeply concerned. They had been following news about the government’s separation of parents and children and were unsure how they could help. They quickly mobilized, assigning two lawyers and a paralegal who spoke Portuguese full-time to assist her. Within a week, they had located the child and contacted government authorities. When the authorities refused to release the child, they flew one lawyer and a paralegal to Chicago, where the child was being held.

They filed a lawsuit in federal court, and in less than 24 hours, a federal judge reunited the parent and child, forcing the government to comply. The case was both thrilling and profoundly gratifying. In the months that followed, his firm was inundated with calls not only from the media but also from other parents separated from their children. Over the next five months, they successfully reunited 11 more parents with their children. He recalls this as one of the most exciting, meaningful, and rewarding moments of his career.
