Cambridge, MA immigration lawyer Jeff Goldman talks about how his firm helps athletes coming to the United States. He notes that U.S. immigration laws have a special affinity for athletes worldwide, welcoming those who compete at a high, internationally recognized level. Foreign athletes can obtain a P-1 visa to enter the United States and participate in their respective sports. His firm has handled numerous P-1 visas, assisting athletes in sports ranging from golf, tennis, swimming, and basketball to scuba diving and badminton.

Additionally, the O-1 visa allows athletes to come to the United States either to play or coach their sport if they are among the most extraordinary athletes in their respective countries. His firm has helped clients secure O-1 visas for Major League Baseball, NHL, and NBA players, as well as athletes who, while not in the top professional leagues, are internationally recognized at the highest level.

They represent at least eight Olympic medalists—gold and silver—as well as NCAA champions who continue competing at world-class levels or transition into coaching. By securing O-1 visas, his firm enables these athletes to remain in the U.S. to continue their athletic or coaching careers. He finds this area of immigration law particularly rewarding.
