I think the main difference is the fact that attorneys in this firm had other professions before they went to law school, so they’re mature, they have other life experiences they can bring to a problem, and this is to our clients’ benefit because our attorneys have been in the same shoes and they understand what the client is looking for as far as reassurance. The key there is communication. We strive to make sure that at least monthly each client is updated and given a status of their case.

We try to discuss with our client the issues that they’re faced with. We then break it down into the various aspects of resolving their matter, and we’re realistic with them. A lot of times, people have the notion, well, I’ll just take them to court, and to do that, you’re looking at $10,000. And then when you look at the matter at hand, which is only a few thousand, it’s not practical to do that, so we look at other means for remedy. When we look at the problem, we try to do a cost-benefit analysis, and a lot of times, people in their desire to get justice, they want to proceed at all cost. But there comes to a point where it’s not practical to continue to invest dollars into a matter that they may or may not win, and so we look at other remedies so that they can save face. This may be through mediation, may be through arbitration. We’re fortunate in King County, where there’s mandatory mediation. It reduces dramatically the number of cases that go to trial. In fact, 99 percent never make it to trial.
