i have seen law as a helping profession
you’re bringing a base of knowledge to
two people so i’ve spent
you know a lot of years in law school
and then 28 years in practice you know
you’re bringing that knowledge to people
um to help them solve their problems and
so
i see it as a as a helping profession in
that way
that we’re you know getting people to to
a new place and it’s you know the most
intense
difficult intimate areas of people’s
lives
meeting their relationship with their
children and their and their spouse and
we’re trying to find solutions to that
often very tangled web you know helping
people get to a better place in their
life is kind of one of the is one of the
things i see as a
hallmark of my approach to the law
a lot of times we have clients come in
who are in a very bad place
ranging from victims of abuse to
chemically dependent or have a
chemically dependent spouse
people with mental health issues i mean
there’s just a whole range of things
and they’re in a bad place because of
those problems or because of their
spouse
and very often by the end of the case
you know people have a path
either to
sobriety or access to their kids or
dealing with their mental health issues
very often there’s there’s a lot of
success stories
and in my adr practice there’s a lot
more success stories because
while litigation is focused on
you know pointing out the facts and the
flaws
in the other side
dispute resolution you’re
problem-solving you’re trying to find
ways of helping you know this family
untangle itself
and so you’re you know figuring out
schedules and access to money and access
to property vehicles houses whatever
most of those opportunities you know you
spend three hours with the family
they come in wanting to solve their
problems and usually they do
and usually they find solutions
even in just a three-hour meeting so
there’s a lot of rewards in that that
aspect of my practice

St. Paul, MN family law attorney Thomas Tuft shares the philosophy that guides his work as a lawyer as well as the most rewarding aspect of his practice. He views law as a helping profession, one where he brings years of study and decades of practice to guide people through some of the most difficult and intimate challenges of their lives. After law school and nearly three decades in practice, he sees his role as using that knowledge to help people solve problems and move forward.

For him, the hallmark of his approach is helping clients reach a better place. Often, people come to him at their lowest point—victims of abuse, spouses dealing with chemical dependency, or individuals struggling with mental health issues. By the end of their case, many clients find a new path—toward sobriety, access to their children, or better management of their challenges. He notes that there are many success stories that emerge from those difficult beginnings.

In his ADR work, those success stories are even more frequent. Unlike litigation, which often centers on exposing flaws in the other side, alternative dispute resolution focuses on problem-solving—helping families untangle themselves and move forward. Whether it’s working out schedules, dividing property, or sorting out finances, he finds that even in a few hours of mediation, families who come in determined to resolve their issues often leave with solutions. For him, that problem-solving process and the positive outcomes it brings are some of the most rewarding aspects of his practice.
