the advice i always give clients
is
that they should always look at
proceeding in their action
in a business sense so oftentimes the
question comes
if you want to proceed fighting over
a particular issue how much is that
going to cost
and does it pay to give the money that
you would give me
to your spouse
so that you can bring that issue to a
close
in other words if you give me the money
i will give you a great fight but i
can’t give you certainty
if however you give that money to your
spouse that may solve the issue and give
you the certainty you’re looking for to
be able to bring the matrimonial to a
close and enable you to move on
[Music]
i have a broad background in psychology
in formerly being a state supreme court
law librarian
as well as doing public corruption and
fraud investigations
so
putting those pieces together
that helps me position things to clients
in a psychological way that helps them
understand why they may or may not want
to proceed in a particular manner it
gives me the ability to do extensive
legal research on very esoteric issues
that might really help and make a
difference in breaking the case and
getting it over with
and it also enables me to go through
financial records
and understand how money has worked
within the marriage system
so that we’re able to find out whether
or not there was misspending of money
hiding of assets that kind of thing
before we send it off to experts and
incur that cost

NY family law attorney Ken Jewell shares his most common piece of advice to clients as well as his background and experience. He advises clients to always approach their divorce actions from a business perspective. Often, the question arises whether it is worth fighting over a particular issue, considering how much it will cost and whether the money spent on legal fees might be better directed toward settling the matter with the other spouse. In essence, he explains that while hiring him can produce a vigorous fight, it cannot guarantee certainty. On the other hand, sometimes paying a sum to resolve the issue with the spouse may provide the clarity and closure the client needs to move forward.
His extensive background—including psychology, work as a former state Supreme Court law librarian, and experience in public corruption and fraud investigations—enables him to guide clients strategically. He is able to explain the psychological aspects of the case, helping clients understand why certain approaches may or may not be in their best interest. Additionally, his skills in legal research allow him to handle complex and nuanced issues that could make a meaningful difference in resolving a case efficiently. His financial expertise also allows him to analyze marital finances, uncovering misspending or hidden assets before involving experts, thereby controlling costs and positioning the case advantageously.
