Within the last four years, I have served on as a board of directors of a nonprofit
family law firm called Levit Quinn. We provide a either no fee or sliding scale
fee and make court appearances, take a party, lowincome parties throughout the entire process of the divorce and paternity, child custody matters,
domestic violence restraining order matters, and it’s been very rewarding for me. Most of the board that sits with
me are retired judicial officers, some who have sat as the supervising judges of the family law division. It’s
dissimilar to some other charitable uh foundations in the fact that they make
court appearances. Often parties are left with assistance in doing paperwork but not necessarily having counsel that
advocates for them. So I have done that uh within the last eight or seven years.
I was appointed by the prior supervising judge of family law division to sit as a temporary judge. It is a volunteer
position. I go and when judges are on vacation or they’re on their own programs, they’re unavailable, I will
sit with the black robe and all uh in courtrooms within I generally go to the
downtown courthouse and judge Lolinara sits on the bench. It’s a very different experience. I’m used to advocating for
one side. I tend to go in early, review the cases. There’s sometimes 15 16 cases on calendar. I have no familiarity with
the cases at all. I read them, read all the pleadings, try to give every litigant an opportunity to be heard and
move from there. And it is extremely rewarding as well because I’m giving parties an opportunity to be heard and
help them through very difficult process as well.

Los Angeles, CA family law attorney Marie A. LaMolinara talks about serving on boards and leadership positions in the Bar or her community.
