To be honest, when I graduated law school, uh when I started working in the legal industry, I didn’t even know elder law was a practice area. I didn’t know
it existed. And I was working doing litigation and other things that did not suit my personality very well. I’m a I’m
a planner, not a fighter. And so, I went to an estate planning, an elder law seminar. And at first, I was like, “Oh
my god, this is so boring. No one wants to do wills. it’s just not the thing that I wanted to spend the rest of my life doing. And during that weekend, my
uh stepfather, who had raised me since I was a teenager, um was going through a lot of health issues. He’d had vascular
dementia and he kept falling out of the bed and my mom had to make the very very difficult decision to uh place him in a
nursing home. And she was asking me about Medicaid and about long-term care.
and I had no idea how to answer her questions. But then I went to this seminar and in front of me there were all of these incredibly amazing,
generous attorneys who were talking about the exact thing that my family was going through and how to help families like mine do like navigate these waters.
And so I joined the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys at the at the end of the day on the first day and I stopped
everything I was doing and spent six months mainlining legal education on estate planning and
elder law. And then I opened a firm because this was like it was complete serendipity. like this was a way that I
could use my law degree in a way that truly helped people manage things that
every family has to go through. Um, and so for me it was a no-brainer that this was the area I wanted to practice in.
And I’ve been doing it now for over 10 years and I like I wouldn’t change it for the world. I wouldn’t go to any other practice.
