Yes, there are really great planning opportunities for a married
couple. the statutes that that we have to rely on for qualification for Medicaid, for qualification for for any
skind of of government benefits. They recognize that we don’t want a healthy
spouse to have to completely impoverish themselves in order for the other spouse to be able to receive care. And so we
have rules that we can work within to allow one spouse at home to be able to
protect or be able to to maintain as much assets for themselves as they can so that they can continue to live and
continue being in the community and paying their bills while still allowing their their loved one, their spouse to
to get the care that they need. The cost of long-term care is astronomical and it is out of the realm for most people. And
so we have to rely on the system. We have to be able to rely on the system in order to to to pick up that um those
extra costs. And but we don’t want the spouse at home to be placed in a
situation where they can’t continue living because their spouse got ill. And so what we do is we we look at the
rules, we see the circumstances, and we help people kind of navigate the best way to protect those assets for um for
the spouse at home. I have a lot better rules to be able to do that for a married couple than I do for a single individual, but we can absolutely help
someone who’s married allow their spouse to get the care they need while still not just completely depleting everything that they own.

Lynwood, WA estates planning and probate attorney Angela Odensky talks about how a married couple can protect assets if one spouse needs nursing home care.
