Chicago, IL estate planning & probate attorney SJ Chapman shares the philosophy that guides her work as well as her service to the community. She explains that her guiding philosophy is rooted in personal experience, as much of her work in elder law stems from having parents who themselves required elder law assistance. Her father was diagnosed with Parkinson’s in 2012, and she understood that he would eventually need long-term care. Working with him, she helped establish a Medicaid asset protection trust to safeguard the assets her parents had spent a lifetime building, providing them peace of mind that they would not need to deplete their resources to secure his care.

She notes that when someone is diagnosed with a condition like Parkinson’s, it brings significant family stress, uncertainty, and worry. Having personally navigated these challenges, she brings empathy to her practice and is able to provide clients with peace of mind based on her firsthand experience with similar life circumstances.

Giving back to the community has always been important to her. She recently traveled to Africa with Lawyers Without Borders to train prosecutors, immigration officers, and judges on how to investigate, prosecute, and try cases under a new anti-human trafficking law in Tanzania. This work has taken her to remarkable places, including a personal introduction to Justice Sonia Sotomayor. She emphasizes that her efforts outside the firm positively impact both global and local communities.

Additionally, she dedicates her holidays to volunteering at local food banks, supporting organizations such as Rogers Park Food Bank in Chicago and various food banks in and around Brooklyn, New York.
