00:04
when people come in
00:05
normally they’re a little bit uncertain
00:08
about
00:09
what to expect with the lawyer and one
00:12
of the things that we do
00:13
is try to make the meeting as simple as
00:16
possible
00:17
and so i share with people that we’re
00:19
seeking
00:20
the most efficient way to accomplish
00:23
their goals and objectives
00:24
to give them peace of mind about their
00:26
estate plan
00:28
so i share with them the three things
00:29
that we need to know
00:31
number one we need to know what kind of
00:33
assets are we talking about
00:35
because each estate is different and
00:37
each asset has different legal
00:39
characteristics
00:40
number two we want to know about the
00:43
family because the family is generally
00:45
the natural objects of their bounty and
00:48
number three
00:49
we want to know what their general goal
00:51
is
00:52
in their estate plan and with that
00:55
information
00:56
we can create an estate plan that
00:58
achieves
00:59
the most efficient way to transfer their
01:02
estate
01:03
and to preserve their assets in their
01:05
planning process
01:06
and obtain peace of mind with that
01:10
result
01:14
come in and sit down with the lawyer
01:17
you don’t have to have a lot of
01:19
information the purpose of the meeting
01:21
is to start to develop a plan
01:24
that will reach their goals and
01:26
objectives and it’s like
01:28
very much like going on a safari
01:32
when you go to on a safari you’re going
01:34
to want the right equipment
01:36
you’re going to want the right
01:37
understanding of the territory you’re
01:39
going to want a
01:40
guide who’s going to know all of these
01:42
factors so that
01:43
it will be a very a wonderful experience
01:46
when you go for
01:47
a photo shoot in africa you want to come
01:50
back
01:51
all in one piece you want to have the
01:53
protection
01:54
and you want to be sure that that that
01:57
trip
01:57
turned out well so i tell people
01:59
frequently
02:00
that i’m i’m your guide in the jungle in
02:03
estate planning and estate
02:06
administration
02:10
i’ve had a very fortunate journey
02:13
first of all i started out at the
02:15
university of houston
02:16
i got my law degree there and i had an
02:18
opportunity to work for the internal
02:20
revenue service
02:21
as an estate and gift tax attorney there
02:24
i was able to really learn about the tax
02:26
laws and the application of the tax laws
02:28
and the collection of the tax laws
02:30
because that was my job
02:31
so that was tremendous opportunity then
02:34
i went to
02:35
work for southwestern university in
02:37
georgetown texas a
02:39
a very prestigious small school that
02:42
and my job was to help build the
02:43
endowment so i was
02:45
able to learn a lot about the charitable
02:47
giving aspects of estate planning
02:50
and then i had an opportunity to work
02:52
for a small law firm for
02:54
for a few years and then in 1981 we
02:57
started
02:58
riddle and associates that is now riddle
03:00
and butts

Spring, TX estate planning & probate lawyer Michael C. Riddle shares the philosophy of his practice as well as his most common advice to clients. He shares that when clients come in, they are often uncertain about what to expect from a lawyer. He makes it a point to simplify the process, emphasizing that the goal is to efficiently achieve their objectives and provide peace of mind regarding their estate plan. He explains that he needs to understand three key things: the client’s assets, since each has unique legal characteristics; the family, as they are generally the natural recipients of the estate; and the client’s overall goals for the plan. With this information, he can design a strategy that preserves assets, transfers the estate efficiently, and aligns with the client’s wishes.

He often compares estate planning to a safari. Just as a successful safari requires the right equipment, knowledge of the terrain, and a skilled guide to ensure safety and enjoyment, estate planning requires guidance to navigate complex legal and financial landscapes. He positions himself as that guide, helping clients traverse the complexities of estate planning and administration, ensuring the journey is managed well and the outcome successful. He reassures clients that they don’t need to have all the details at the first meeting—the purpose is to start crafting a plan that meets their objectives.

His own career has provided extensive preparation for this role. He earned his law degree from the University of Houston and began his career at the Internal Revenue Service as an estate and gift tax attorney, gaining in-depth knowledge of tax laws and their application. He then worked at Southwestern University in Georgetown, Texas, helping to build the school’s endowment and gaining expertise in charitable giving. After several years at a small law firm, he co-founded Riddle and Associates in 1981, which has since evolved into Riddle and Butts, where he continues to guide clients with knowledge, experience, and dedication.
