Spring, TX estate planning & probate lawyer Michael C. Riddle shares the philosophy of his practice as well as his most common advice to clients. He shares that when clients come in, they are often uncertain about what to expect from a lawyer. He makes it a point to simplify the process, emphasizing that the goal is to efficiently achieve their objectives and provide peace of mind regarding their estate plan. He explains that he needs to understand three key things: the client’s assets, since each has unique legal characteristics; the family, as they are generally the natural recipients of the estate; and the client’s overall goals for the plan. With this information, he can design a strategy that preserves assets, transfers the estate efficiently, and aligns with the client’s wishes.
He often compares estate planning to a safari. Just as a successful safari requires the right equipment, knowledge of the terrain, and a skilled guide to ensure safety and enjoyment, estate planning requires guidance to navigate complex legal and financial landscapes. He positions himself as that guide, helping clients traverse the complexities of estate planning and administration, ensuring the journey is managed well and the outcome successful. He reassures clients that they don’t need to have all the details at the first meeting—the purpose is to start crafting a plan that meets their objectives.
His own career has provided extensive preparation for this role. He earned his law degree from the University of Houston and began his career at the Internal Revenue Service as an estate and gift tax attorney, gaining in-depth knowledge of tax laws and their application. He then worked at Southwestern University in Georgetown, Texas, helping to build the school’s endowment and gaining expertise in charitable giving. After several years at a small law firm, he co-founded Riddle and Associates in 1981, which has since evolved into Riddle and Butts, where he continues to guide clients with knowledge, experience, and dedication.
