Preparation. Everything about treating people respectfully is a plan. How can I make sure that our last interaction is as respectful as possible? So, preparation means looking back to say, “What have I communicated in writing with these folks? Have I given them a fair shot letting them know, hopefully, starting from the beginning, started from the job ad said I want you to do A, B, C. Your first performance review said, ‘Please do A, B, C. You’re kind of doing X, Y, and Z. Could you get back to A, B, C?’ ” A warning letter. So, you look at all those things and then you say, “How am I going to talk to this person?” Write down what you’re going to say. Make a guess about what they might say and have answers for what they might say. And do something nice. Like, bring their last check with you. Thank them for their time. Prepare for each of those things because the nicer you are in a challenging circumstance the more likely it is you are not going to get sued.

Minneapolis and St. Cloud employment law attorney Sheila Engelmeier explains that treating employees with respect is the most important thing for employers to consider.
