Dealing with an unreasonable opposing party is one of the biggest challenges that every family law attorney faces. Of course, one question is always making sure that you’re not the unreasonable party. We give the feedback to our clients to know so that they know when they are taking a reasonable position and when they’re taking a position that will be hard to defend.

When the other party is the one who’s being unreasonable, we do everything we can to limit the fees that can be run up by the other side, and yet, provide enough defense against those unreasonable positions to make sure that you don’t end up making bad decisions just to avoid the conflict. We will go to court when necessary; we will avoid court when we can.

We will deal with the opposing party or opposing attorney on our terms in a reasonable way, because the court usually will recognize when one party is being reasonable and the other one is making the process difficult. We have a reputation for being in the former category. The court knows the attorneys here as attorneys who are not going to unnecessarily run up bills. And so, when we show up in court, we are the ones presenting the case in the way that the court wants to see a case presented and expects to see it presented.

Seattle, WA family law attorney Michael Louden talks about how he helps his divorce clients deal with an unreasonable spouse.
