cases is uh the defendant doesn’t want
to take the risk of being convicted at
trial and you know the consequences that
come with that and prosecutors don’t
want to take the risk of the defense

Minneapolis, MN criminal defense attorney Ryan Garry talks about how a plea bargain works. He explains that every criminal case is unique, but the vast majority are resolved through plea agreements. In these situations, the defendant and either the State of Minnesota or the United States Attorney’s Office reach a negotiated settlement. Defendants often choose this route to avoid the risk of conviction at trial and the significant consequences that may follow, while prosecutors seek to minimize the possibility of a defense attorney securing a not guilty verdict. As a result, most criminal cases conclude through negotiated resolutions, and it is the defense attorney’s role to secure the most favorable outcome possible for the client.
