Well, in New Jersey, everybody who drives a car, who a registered automobile, must have what’s called PIP,
personal injury protection. It’s also referred to as no fault insurance. So, the law says it doesn’t matter whose
fault an accident is. Your own car insurance always pays your medical bills. Not your health insurance, not
the insurance for the car that caused the accident, your own car insurance.
And the other rule, PIP follows the person. So if I was a passenger in someone’s car and they got into an
accident, my car insurance follows me into their car and my car insurance pays my medical bills just like their car insurance pays their medical bills.
Follows you wherever you go. Even if you’re a pedestrian crossing the street and you get hit by a car, the car that hits you does not pay your medical
bills. Your car insurance is on your shoulders as you cross the street and your car insurance pays your medical bills.

Parsippany, NJ personal injury attorney Christopher Masmunno talks about how insurance works in car accident cases. He explains that in New Jersey, every registered automobile owner is required to carry Personal Injury Protection (PIP), also known as no-fault insurance. He notes that regardless of who caused the accident, an individual’s own car insurance is responsible for paying their medical bills, rather than their health insurance or the at-fault driver’s insurance. He clarifies that PIP coverage follows the person, meaning their own car insurance covers their medical expenses whether they are driving, riding as a passenger in another vehicle, or even walking as a pedestrian who is struck by a car.
