People talk a lot about Karon waivers. Karon waivers are a created waiver after the Karon case that provides that parties can make decisions about the court’s jurisdiction to modify spousal maintenance. If there’s an award of spousal maintenance, absent a Karon waiver the court has ongoing jurisdiction to increase, decrease, suspend, or terminate spousal maintenance. What a Karon waiver does is it allows the parties to agree that the court’s jurisdiction to modify spousal maintenance will either be limited or be eliminated, so that they both have certainty about what the duration and the amount of the award of spousal maintenance will be.

Minnesota family law attorney DeAnne Dulas defines a Karon waiver.
