Marital property is any property that was accumulated during the marriage, so from the time that the parties were married until the divorce is finished, not the time of separation or when the divorce starts. Non-marital property is any property that they acquired before the marriage or during the marriage by gift or inheritance from a family member to them alone.

Minnesota family law attorney DeAnne Dulas distinguishes marital and non-marital property.
