Prior to the position I currently enjoy as my own boss I was, essentially in house for a company called Thomas Miller. They are managers for the UK P&I club which is a protection indemnity group or an insurer, for those that are not familiar. And it was the largest insurer worldwide for liability losses for ships. And that experience gave me an appreciation for what it’s like to sit in a position of a client because I was the client for cases that had to go into litigation I had to hire outside counsel.

So, of course, I know the pressures of what it is to be an insurance claims handler handling hundreds of cases at a time and knowing what it is to have to report to my higher ups in terms of what’s happening in a case. So that helps me today because, of course, I know the pressures that a client may be under in terms of reporting, maybe, to a higher up and the pressures that also a vessel owner has because they, themselves have to deal with insurers. And it was an experience that continues to guide me today on how I handle cases on a daily basis.

Miami, FL admiralty & maritime attorney Michelle Otero Valdés talks about the most valuable experience she took from her in-house work experience. She shares that prior to her current role as her own boss, she worked essentially in-house for a company called Thomas Miller. They manage the UK P&I Club, a protection and indemnity group or insurer for those unfamiliar, and the largest insurer worldwide for liability losses involving ships. That experience gave her a deep appreciation for what it is like to be a client, as she was the client in cases that went into litigation and had to hire outside counsel.

Through that role, she gained firsthand knowledge of the pressures faced by insurance claims handlers managing hundreds of cases at once and the demands of reporting to superiors on case developments. This perspective helps her today in understanding the pressures her clients may face, whether reporting to higher-ups or managing interactions with insurers as vessel owners. It was an experience that continues to guide how she handles cases on a daily basis.
