Sure. We had a case in 2013 where we represented a young man who was found in Minneapolis in a mental health crisis, unable to care for himself. He was taken to Hennepin County Jail by the police and stayed there for a number of days. Throughout his stay at the jail, he was demonstrating a lot of symptoms of a real mental health crisis. He was engaged in self harm, scratching himself, things like that.

And it really went unchecked by the people working at the jail. They actually thought that he was exaggerating his symptoms. They didn’t say that he was faking, but that’s really what they believed. And he ended up taking a pencil and stabbing his eye out, and losing vision in one of his eyes at the end of this crisis. He had so many things that were screaming out to the guards and the nurses at the facility that were ignored.

And we helped him. We took his case, explained the process to him, and got him a very good settlement early on the case that would allow him, hopefully, to get the treatment that he needs, stay out of the system, and make something good happen with his life.

Minneapolis attorney Andy Noel discusses important civil rights cases.
