When you have a self-employed parent, gathering accurate information for income purposes can be very challenging and difficult. We, of course, start out by looking at tax records and payroll records for that person, but we also look at other documents that help us to understand that standard of living that person may have. So bank records, credit cards receipts all help us to paint a picture of what that person’s lifestyle is. We also need to keep in mind that all deductions that may be deductible to the IRS are not deductible for child support purposes. So any expenses that are also going to reduce that person’s living expenses get added back into their income when we calculate support.

Minnesota family law attorney DeAnne Dulas explains how to evaluate a self-employed parent’s child support obligations.
