A patent is this legal instrument and it has a number of different sections and one of those sections is called the claims and the claims is a numbered list of sentences that describe the boundaries of the clever idea. So when you consider a real estate metaphor, say a house for example, we look at the property boundaries and say there it is. We’re not able to lay out the boundaries quite so easily when it comes to something that’s not tangible, an intangible object such as a patent. And so in these cases we use words to describe where the boundaries like and that’s’ exactly what the claims of the patent set forth.

Minneapolis patent lawyer David Black explains that the claims is a number list of sentences that describe the boundaries of the patented idea.
