The patent owner enjoys a number of rights and among those rights one of the most important is the ability to exclude, the ability to stop others from making, using or selling, the technology that’s covered by the claims. And so it gives the patentee the ability to stop people from importing products or technology at the border. You can shut them down at the docks coming into the United States and you can stop a competitor that sets up shop and starts to sell a product that infringes a claim of your patent.
