The Cited Art Landscape is essentially a list of all the companies that have patents that were cited against the patent in question. So if I’ve filed or issued a patent or I’m looking at a patent somebody else issued, I can look at that landscape to determine which companies held the technology that was most important to that patent’s examination, and that helps me understand who the competitors were at the time the patent was filed. So that’s the backward citation landscape.
