in the late 1990s I was practicing real
00:08
estate law in a in a family practice my
00:11
father and my sister are real estate
00:12
attorneys and I joined them and I was
00:15
enjoying what I was doing at one point a
00:18
foreign national came into my office to
00:20
buy a condo and the next thing I knew I
00:23
helped him with the purchase of his
00:26
condo with the sale of his home I helped
00:28
him with another real estate matter and
00:31
suddenly he wanted me to do his
00:33
immigration I told him I know nothing
00:36
about immigration and I’m not going to
00:38
be able to help you with your
00:39
immigration and like many foreign
00:41
nationals he looked at me and said you
00:43
are my attorney
00:44
you’re going to help me with my
00:45
immigration so I said ok I’ll learn a
00:48
little bit about it I signed up to take
00:50
a four-hour course on immigration and
00:53
found it to be the most interesting four
00:56
hours I had ever spent in an academic
00:58
situation I learned that you can truly
01:02
change people’s lives by understanding
01:05
the law and help and guide these foreign
01:07
nationals through the law so that they
01:09
can legally come to the United States
01:11
and survive and thrive here in the
01:15
United States of America and I knew that
01:18
that is what I wanted to do so I started
01:20
to take on one or two immigration cases
01:24
I reached out to other immigration
01:26
lawyers who were most helpful on those
01:29
first few cases and I ended up getting
01:31
approvals from the United States
01:33
Immigration Service and before I knew
01:35
what was happening the phone was ringing
01:36
off the hook hi I heard you helped
01:39
so-and-so with an immigration matter can
01:40
I come in that had never happened with
01:43
real estate because there are so many
01:45
real estate attorneys in the United
01:47
States but with immigration I felt I had
01:49
found a niche that I was excited about
01:52
and passionate about and I decided to
01:55
steer my practice toward solely being an
01:58
immigration lawyer

Cambridge, MA immigration lawyer Jeff Goldman tells the story of how he got involved in immigration law. He shares that in the late 1990s, he was practicing real estate law in a family firm alongside his father and sister, both of whom were real estate attorneys. He enjoyed his work until a foreign national came into his office to buy a condo. After assisting him with the purchase, the sale of his previous home, and another real estate matter, the client asked for help with his immigration.

Although he initially admitted he knew nothing about immigration law, the client insisted, saying, “You are my attorney; you’re going to help me.” Motivated to assist, he enrolled in a four-hour immigration course and found it to be the most engaging academic experience he had ever had. He realized he could profoundly impact people’s lives by guiding foreign nationals through the legal process, helping them come to the United States legally and thrive.

He began taking on one or two immigration cases, seeking guidance from experienced immigration lawyers. Soon, he secured approvals from the U.S. Immigration Service, and before long, his phone started ringing constantly with new clients seeking his assistance. Unlike real estate, where competition was high, he discovered a niche in immigration law that excited him. Passionate about this work, he decided to shift his practice entirely to immigration law.
