I became an immigration lawyer I think
00:06
because of my interest in international
00:09
issues and my profound belief that
00:12
immigrants are you know what make up the
00:15
fabric of the United States that their
00:18
contributions are critical to our
00:21
economy and to the diversity of our
00:23
population my own family background also
00:26
probably contributed to it my ancestors
00:29
are from a range of countries Eastern
00:32
European ancestry a I have ancestors
00:36
from Spain from Portugal
00:38
my mother’s Puerto Rican and it’s just
00:41
sort of a blend of all different
00:43
cultures and countries in my band my own
00:45
background and in addition to that my
00:48
wife is from Spain and she’s an
00:50
immigrant as well and dealing with her
00:53
process of get coming to the United
00:56
States some of the issues that she had
00:59
with immigration officials that weren’t
01:01
always pleasant some of the traumatizing
01:03
and really stressful situations that I
01:06
saw her going through that also I think
01:09
led me to becoming an immigration lawyer
01:11
so it was a mix of things that led me to
01:14
this place that I thought I’m now for me
01:21
I think honesty direct communication
01:25
setting expectations I really think
01:27
that’s really important I think people
01:28
they know when you’re not telling them
01:32
the real story they want to be told what
01:35
the truth is what to expect in the
01:38
process I think it’s really important
01:40
that attorneys don’t over promise
01:42
anything nothing is guaranteed in the
01:44
law especially with immigration and I
01:47
just think that it’s very important to
01:49
be very clear and honest with clients
01:52
and then to provide them with a sort of
01:55
a guide post and a calming influence
01:58
because the immigration process can be
02:01
extremely stressful especially in
02:04
today’s world they really need somebody
02:06
who they feel is in control and
02:09
understands the process inside and out
02:11
and can sort of give them a reality
02:15
check and calm their nerves as they go
02:18
through the process with every passing
02:20
day under this administration things
02:23
become really more complicated and more
02:26
stressful and lengthier and so I think
02:28
it’s important to provide them with
02:30
guideposts that they can that they can
02:33
look to for a calming influence
