The one piece of advice that I give every client is, be careful what you write by way of email, or text, or what you post on social media. If you don’t want a judge reading what you’ve written, then you shouldn’t write it because it will come back to haunt you.

In the first six years of my legal career I was a prosecutor in Boston trying cases to juries – serious felony cases such as shootings, stabbings, sexual assaults, armed robberies.

The skills that I learned and picked up along the way doing that were readily transferable to what we do here today, and what I specifically do as I try personal injury cases to juries, and I also try divorce cases and domestic relations cases to judges. There’s no right to a jury trial in domestic relations cases in Massachusetts, but the trial skills are the same.

Hingham, MA family law attorney James M. Lynch shares his most common advice to clients and talks about his background & experience. He advises every client to be extremely cautious about what they write in emails, texts, or social media posts. If it’s something they wouldn’t want a judge to see, they shouldn’t write it, because it can easily be used against them later.

Early in his legal career, he spent six years as a prosecutor in Boston, trying serious felony cases before juries, including shootings, stabbings, sexual assaults, and armed robberies. The skills he developed during that time—trial strategy, presenting evidence, and persuading a jury—translated seamlessly into his current work. Today, he applies those skills both in personal injury cases before juries and in divorce and domestic relations cases before judges. While domestic relations cases in Massachusetts do not grant a right to a jury trial, the trial techniques and courtroom experience remain the same.
