being a family law attorney first and
foremost it’s a difficult profession
there’s a lot of tension there’s a lot
of animosity so that goes along with the
rewards as well a lot of the times to
proceed from the beginning to the end of
a case you face a lot of obstacles
there’s a lot of difficulties and
particularly for the client it’s a
really difficult process so the reward
is often seeing your client being in a
much better position at the end of the
case than they were at the beginning of
the case or even during the proceeding
so ultimately senior client not only
them but also their children or child um
get to a place where you see them being
comfortable and happy going
[Music]
forward of course I went to law school
but uh just going to law school and
taking the bars while it’s the
prerequisite to becoming a lawyer
there’s a lot of other experiences you
should build upon on to help you in a
practice for me personally starting with
my University education taking a lot of
classes in in writing in literature in
psychology and sociology I think really
helped me to broaden my experience and
my knowledge and be able to deal um
especially with people with my clients
with judges with opposing attorneys and
to really be able to anticipate the
emotions of what clients feel undergoing
the litigation process anticipating how
a witness is going to testify on the
stand anticipating how a judge is going
to perceive it so I think a lot of my
experience of knowledge comes from that
but also I think a lot of writing I’ve
done in the past whether it’s from my
law school newspaper whether it’s
professional articles I’ve published or
just writing um novels or things of that
sort in my spare time have really helped
me developed uh the writing aspect of
preparing pleadings preparing
cross-examination questions closing
arguments that I think could be really
compelling and persuasive in the
courtroom

Los Angeles, CA family law attorney Eric Meyer discusses the most rewarding aspect of his practice as well as his background & experience. He reflects that being a family law attorney is, first and foremost, a challenging profession. There is often significant tension and animosity, which comes with the territory, but the rewards can be equally meaningful. From the beginning to the end of a case, both attorneys and clients face numerous obstacles. For clients, the process can be particularly difficult, so the greatest reward is seeing them emerge in a far better position than when the case began—emotionally, financially, or in terms of their family dynamics. Witnessing clients, and their children, reach a place of comfort and stability brings him the most satisfaction.

Although he attended law school and passed the bar—the essential prerequisites for becoming a lawyer—he emphasizes that other experiences have been critical to his practice. His undergraduate education, which included classes in writing, literature, psychology, and sociology, helped him broaden his perspective and better understand human behavior. These skills have proven invaluable in dealing with clients, judges, and opposing counsel, anticipating client emotions, predicting how witnesses might testify, and understanding how a judge may perceive the case.

He also notes that extensive writing experience—ranging from contributions to his law school newspaper, professional articles, to creative writing like novels—has honed his ability to craft pleadings, cross-examination questions, and closing arguments. This background has been instrumental in developing persuasive and compelling courtroom advocacy.
