so one piece of advice that I constantly
find myself giving my clients is to keep
in mind that one of you has made the
decision to end this marriage but the
other party needs to catch up there may
be emotional or baggage or just a time
period where you realize you are further
ahead in that processing than they are
or your spouse may be further ahead in
that processing than you are there’s
always one party that’s further ahead
and so sometimes what we really need to
do is to back up realize that there
might be a period of catch up to make
sure you’re both on the same emotional
plane and you can really be thinking
clearly for what makes sense in your
divorce what I do to guide my practice
working with a clients is ensuring that
my clients making informed decisions
what that means is gathering all the
relevant facts whether that’s through
interviews with my client interviews
with the posing party or gathering
underlying information like documents
equipping my client with what that
information is and then ensuring that
they’re making informed decisions I or a
judge will never really be in a position
to second guess what makes the most
sense for you the client and so instead
what I’m going to do is gather that
information equip you to make those
important
decisions

Portland, OR family law attorney Charles Weber talks about the philosophy of his practice and shares his most common piece of advice to clients. He often advises his clients to remember that in a divorce, one party has made the decision to end the marriage while the other may need time to catch up emotionally. There is frequently a period in which one spouse is further along in processing the separation than the other. He emphasizes the importance of recognizing this disparity and allowing time for both parties to reach a similar emotional footing, which is critical for making clear and reasoned decisions during the divorce process.

In guiding his practice, he focuses on ensuring that his clients make fully informed decisions. This involves gathering all relevant facts through client interviews, discussions with the opposing party, and review of pertinent documents. He equips clients with this information so they can make decisions that best reflect their own interests, noting that neither he nor a judge is in a position to second-guess what is right for the client. His role is to provide clarity, context, and support so that clients can navigate the process with confidence.
