00:04
the philosophy
00:05
that that guides my work uh as as a
00:08
lawyer as an attorney
00:10
is is add value i think so many of us
00:13
have been
00:13
raised on you know television series and
00:16
movies to think that a
00:17
a lawyer’s job is is to go in and argue
00:20
and
00:21
you obviously want to be a very
00:23
effective advocate
00:24
for your client but so much of my
00:27
background is in the
00:29
corporate and transactional space
00:31
essentially trying to get a deal done
00:33
and i’ve seen many a very capable lawyer
00:37
mess up what is otherwise a perfectly
00:39
good deal or a perfectly good
00:40
transaction
00:41
because they think that by virtue of the
00:44
fact that they’re someone’s lawyer that
00:46
they need to go
00:46
in and turn over a table and and have an
00:49
argument in order to
00:50
properly advocate for their client i try
00:53
to step back and
00:54
and ask myself you know what is my
00:56
client trying to accomplish and how can
00:58
i add value
00:59
in these circumstances and oftentimes
01:02
that’s as straightforward as
01:03
common sense and moving a project
01:05
forward so i try to add value
01:13
one of the things i discovered uh in law
01:15
school and and then in the practice of
01:17
law is that
01:18
um i i like writing and i like writing
01:20
about the law
01:22
much of my background has been in the
01:24
energy sector specifically on the oil
01:26
and gas side
01:27
and so as a result a lot of my
01:30
writings especially in law review
01:33
articles
01:33
or in industry publications have focused
01:36
on
01:38
the practice of oil and gas law usually
01:40
these articles are
01:41
formed around my experiences
01:44
working deals working transactions in
01:47
the oil patch
01:49
especially when there’s been a dispute
01:51
that has arisen
01:52
out of those transactions these have
01:54
gotten i’m happy to say pretty
01:57
popular responses they’ve been
02:00
cited by various courts of appeals and
02:02
i’ve been very pleased
02:04
to have been invited to speak at various
02:07
law schools
02:08
as well as some continuing legal legal
02:10
education seminars as well

Spring, TX estate planning & probate attorney Caleb Fielder talks about his approach to the practice as well as his scholarly work. He shares that his guiding philosophy as a lawyer is to add value. While popular media often portrays a lawyer’s role as simply arguing in court, he believes that effective advocacy extends far beyond that. Drawing on extensive experience in the corporate and transactional space, he has seen skilled attorneys jeopardize otherwise sound deals or transactions simply because they felt compelled to create conflict.

Instead, he approaches each situation by asking what the client is trying to accomplish and how he can add value. Often, this means applying straightforward common sense and helping move a project forward efficiently.

He also discovered early in his legal career a passion for writing about the law. Much of his background is in the energy sector, specifically oil and gas law. His writings—including law review articles and industry publications—frequently draw from his hands-on experience working deals and resolving disputes in the field. Many of these publications have been well-received, cited by various courts of appeals, and have led to invitations to speak at law schools and continuing legal education seminars.
