well i actually did not plan on being a
00:06
lawyer or dream of being a lawyer as a
00:08
child it was actually in college um i
00:10
decided that
00:12
sort of my junior year that that sounded
00:13
like something i’d like to do and so
00:15
that’s when i started kind of looking
00:16
toward law school but not really an idea
00:19
of what kind of law i wanted to do until
00:20
i
00:21
became until i graduated from law school
00:23
and then realized
00:25
my
00:26
bent was more toward you know the people
00:28
side of the law and not necessarily
00:30
a corporate setting which is where i
00:32
started out after law school
00:38
i do always tell my clients that
00:40
communication is very important with
00:42
their family members friends or the
00:44
folks that are dealing with the
00:45
situation it seems as soon as as family
00:48
members stop communicating with one
00:49
another
00:50
that’s when things break down family
00:52
members get paranoid or
00:54
there’s some um just feeling of not
00:57
being included in the process and so
00:59
especially when you’re dealing with
01:00
parents everyone wants to be involved
01:02
whether they’re in town or not in town
01:04
so i just encourage them to communicate
01:06
with their family members and try to
01:08
keep everybody up to date with what’s
01:10
going on it helps the process a lot

St. Louis, MO estate & probate attorney Alicia Albus shares why she became a lawyer and offers the one piece of advice she repeatedly gives to your clients. She admits that becoming a lawyer wasn’t part of her childhood dream. It wasn’t until her junior year of college that she began to consider law as a career and started exploring the idea of law school. Even then, she wasn’t sure what type of law she wanted to practice. It wasn’t until after graduating that she discovered her true interest lay in the people-oriented side of the profession rather than in a corporate environment, where she initially began her career.

In her work, she emphasizes the importance of communication—especially among families navigating legal or care-related matters. She often reminds her clients that when family members stop communicating, misunderstandings and tension tend to arise. Feelings of exclusion or mistrust can easily develop, particularly when making decisions about aging parents or shared responsibilities. She encourages clients to keep open lines of communication with relatives and others involved, regardless of whether they live nearby or out of town. In her experience, keeping everyone informed not only strengthens relationships but also makes the entire process smoother and more effective.
