The philosophy that guides my work as a lawyer is preparation, because I try my cases. What I try and do and what I do is I review the reports, what we call the discovery, the police reports, the videos, all the documents that are given to me by the prosecution over and over and over and over. And when I thought that I knew it all and I have it all in my head, I then re-read the whole thing again. Because in order to be a good lawyer I believe not only you need to know the law, but you need to know the case and the facts inside out, because if something comes up in court, something comes up during a hearing or a trial and you don’t know all the facts you’re gonna lose. So, my philosophy is to prepare and be truly prepared before I do anything.

22 years after I got my license, I still write out my cross examinations, maybe not word for word but I write them out because I want to be prepared. I want to know that I’m not forgetting anything. I want to know that when I go and cross examine a witness, I know they’re weaknesses and I know their strengths and I know how to attack them. The way I deal with prosecutors really depends on the case, there are times that you need to deal with prosecutors very gingerly, try not to upset them, try not to bring too much attention to your client if there are multi-defendants. And then on the other hand there are times that you need to attack.

When you go to trial you take the gloves off, when you prepare for a hearing you take the gloves off, but on the other hand we’re all human beings and we all need to be nice to each other and this is our jobs and you have to understand that the prosecutor is doing his or her job as well. And so, you treat each other with respect and very nicely, but within your realm you attack them and you don’t back down. There are way too many criminal defense attorneys that are afraid to challenge a prosecutor, especially in federal court. I have absolutely no problem upsetting the prosecutors and even sometimes getting the judge angry when I think I’m right for my client. You need to know how to walk that fine line and I have developed myself a way to know how to do that, or at least I believe I know how to do that in a very effective manner that will benefit my client and my client only, because they are always the ones that come first.
