00:04
the most rewarding aspect of my work as
00:07
an attorney is getting to work directly
00:09
with people i briefly worked for the
00:12
da’s office in law school
00:15
after knowing deciding i wanted to do
00:17
criminal work and quickly decided that
00:20
not having a personal interaction with
00:24
with people and having clients to work
00:27
with was not for me so i get a lot of
00:30
personal
00:31
uh enjoyment and reward out of working
00:34
directly with clients and their families
00:37
uh even though it can be difficult that
00:38
they’re they’re dealing with the most
00:40
difficult uh trying time in their lives
00:43
but approaching that with compassion and
00:45
empathy
00:47
can make it a better experience for
00:48
everyone
00:54
i serve as the treasurer of the georgia
00:57
association of criminal defense lawyers
00:59
a statewide group of criminal defense
01:01
attorneys
01:02
and i also serve for that organization
01:05
as the chair of the parole committee for
01:08
the parole committee i work directly
01:11
with the parole board to effectuate
01:14
change and communication
01:16
on behalf of all incarcerated
01:19
individuals not just my clients but as a
01:22
community service
01:24
and one of our focuses there is uh the
01:27
the way the factors that the the parole
01:30
board uh
01:32
uses uh to
01:34
score individuals for parole is
01:36
is assessed we’re in the middle of
01:40
planning with the parole board for the
01:42
next changes to those factors uh and
01:45
looking forward to that in my work in
01:48
that community and my work
01:50
for
01:51
clients in parole
01:53
recently in the last year i’ve been
01:55
successful at changing the parole
01:58
board’s whole outlook on a certain
02:00
offense that offense being second degree
02:04
murder which is a lower degree of murder
02:07
as as the name implies and the board had
02:09
previously been of the
02:11
opinion that
02:13
individuals convicted of second degree
02:14
murder would not be eligible for parole
02:18
i have a client who was convicted of of
02:20
second-degree murder the parole board
02:23
told him that he was not eligible for
02:25
parole based on that
02:27
conviction
02:28
and in my legal research i was able to
02:31
determine and convince the parole board
02:34
that they were wrong in their
02:35
interpretation of the law and that
02:37
client is now eligible for parole and
02:39
actually has a parole date and will be
02:41
released and that also affects all
02:44
individuals in the state that are that
02:47
were convicted of second-degree murder
02:49
and did not know they would be eligible
02:51
for parole and they will be now
