The approach I take that I think is the single most important thing is that every case, you have to know, represents a human being and that the case affects their liberty, their freedom for themselves. So, you have to prepare every case to fight it. You have to prepare every case like you’re going to do a jury trial. You’re going to take it all the way to the end and fight the case the entire way. So, you have to be prepared. You have to have respect for the individual client, and you have to be ready to go to fight the case at any time.

To be successful in the courtroom I think is two parts. First is there has to be a natural ability to be good in the court. Not every lawyer, not everyone has it, you know. But, the second thing is is that you must, must appreciate that courtroom advocacy, trial advocacy is a real thing. It’s a real subject. It’s not a one plus one equals two. Trial advocacy though is something that you can study, that you can practice, that you can work on. So, it is something that is always in my mind’s eye and that is to understand that trial advocacy is part of what we do. It’s not just learning the criminal law books or the civil rights law books. It’s knowing that trial advocacy is its own subject and having that aggressive trial readiness approach.

Philadelphia, PA criminal defense lawyer Brian J. Zeiger talks about the philosophy that guides his work and what it takes to be successful in the courtroom.
