my philosophy revolves
around one word responsibility
our clients entrust us with matters that
have significant consequences
and whether a client or family member
suffered a catastrophic injury
or whether a client was sued for causing
damage to another
the financial consequences for the
client can be substantial
i’ve been in practice for over 30 years
and each day i take a measure
of the responsibility that comes with
our service
actually i’ve had two mentors bob
ferguson hired me in 1992
to help him with his insurance defense
practice i was just two years out of law
school
and i was very impressionable and from
the very first day
bob instilled in me the importance of
professionalism
and an understanding that the law is an
honorable profession
i zealously represent my clients but i
always do so with respect for my
opponent
and respect for the court attributes
instilled by bob ferguson i also started
working with tom shetlick in 1992 and
tom taught me to be generous
in my practice not only generous with my
time
and effort in service of the firm’s
clients but generous with my time in
helping others within the firm
just as tom helped me when i was an
associate to build my skills as an
attorney
and to build my practice i’m striving to
do the same
with our younger lawyers

Baltimore, MD commercial litigation attorney Peter J. Basile shares the philosophy of his practice as well as the mentors he’s had in his career. He shares that his professional philosophy centers on a single principle: responsibility. Clients entrust him and his firm with matters that carry significant consequences—whether a client or family member has suffered a catastrophic injury, or a client faces a lawsuit for allegedly causing harm. The financial and personal stakes can be substantial.

With over 30 years of legal experience, he approaches each case with a keen awareness of the responsibility inherent in his role. Early in his career, he was mentored by Bob Ferguson, who hired him in 1992 to assist with his insurance defense practice. Ferguson instilled in him the importance of professionalism and a deep respect for the law as an honorable profession. While he zealously represents clients, he does so with respect for opposing counsel and the court.

At the same time, he was mentored by Tom Shetlick, who taught him generosity in practice—not only in dedicating time and effort to clients but also in supporting colleagues. Just as Shetlick guided him in developing his skills and practice as an associate, he now strives to mentor and support the next generation of lawyers in the firm.
