One of the more interesting things I do besides trying cases is acting as an expert witness. I have qualified and testified as an expert in depositions, arbitrations, and trials. And that allows me to look at somebody else’s work, what their strategy was when they started, what happened when they were pursuing their strategy, and the ultimate end result in determining whether or not they were effective. It’s not just interesting to judge what they did for the purpose of acting as an expert but it’s interesting to judge what they did as it helps me to be a better lawyer. Because I can see how other people acted under similar circumstances that I faced and determine what should be done with not only my background and experience but with what they did.

San Francisco, CA commercial litigation attorney Edward Hugo talks about how his experience as an expert witness has helped him as a trial lawyer. He notes that one of the more interesting aspects of his work, beyond trying cases, is serving as an expert witness. He has qualified and testified as an expert in depositions, arbitrations, and trials. This role allows him to analyze the work of other attorneys—their initial strategies, how they executed them, and the ultimate outcomes—to assess their effectiveness. Beyond the immediate purpose of evaluating others, this experience also enhances his own practice. By observing how other lawyers respond to challenges similar to those he has faced, he can refine his approach and apply both his own experience and the lessons learned from others to achieve better results for his clients.
