intellectual property is i think super
exciting it is like legitimately the
hallmark of creativity you know as i’ve
said many of my clients are startup
businesses and they’re entrepreneurs
that
have these great ideas and my job is to
help
protect them to help organize those
ideas into a structure and help protect
those ideas so that they result in an
asset for the client
and intellectual property
you know especially where you’re having
where you have
marks trade names trademarks those type
things are very easy to protect they’re
very easy
to
file either with the uspto or in the
separate states that you work in in the
case of cannabis you can’t file most
things with the uspto there’s some
particular restrictions related to it
but that turns into an asset that you
can you know you can license it’s
another revenue stream that a lot of
people miss and it’s really not that
difficult
but i think it’s a it’s a fascinating
area um
and a lot of people miss it when they’re
starting up their businesses

Las Vegas, NV business law attorney Tisha R. Black talks about her firm’s experience in intellectual property law. She explains that she finds intellectual property incredibly exciting, viewing it as the true hallmark of creativity. Many of her clients are startup entrepreneurs with innovative ideas, and her role is to help organize and protect those ideas so they become tangible assets.
Trademarks, trade names, and similar intellectual property are relatively straightforward to protect through filings with the USPTO or state offices. In the cannabis industry, however, federal restrictions limit what can be filed with the USPTO, adding complexity. Still, these protections create valuable assets that can be licensed, providing an additional revenue stream that many entrepreneurs overlook. She considers it a fascinating and often underappreciated aspect of starting and growing a business.
