we’ve done
and fairly recently a large amount of
celebrity cases and usually
what comes with celebrity cases is a
high net individual usually they have
lots of money when i first started
practicing they’d have millions of
dollars now we have cases where they
literally have
billions of dollars and those cases are
not easy to navigate sometimes the
personalities
of the
clients are difficult to manage
because they’re high stakes and
they’re in the public eye
it’s difficult to
navigate with opposing counsel and
sometimes when the
public is in the courtroom along with
the media the judge’s demeanor is also
different so you have to take that into
account so again this falls within the
ambit you want an attorney
that is a seasoned attorney that has
experience dealing with celebrities with
high net individuals because the laws
are different when it comes to
support child support especially in the
state of california and you want someone
that’s going to be able to deal with the
media and there’s many examples of that
recently in the news
in the case involving amber hurd and
johnny depp we see a lawsuit involving
ms heard writing an op ed in the
washington post without naming mr depp
and being sued for that so if you are
representing a celebrity and you walk
out of a courtroom and and say
you know mr so and so actor is a bad
person for the following reasons and
it’s outside of the courtroom and not in
the paperwork that’s filed in the court
you or your client could be sued for
that so you have to be
very circumspect about
who you talk to and what you say to the
media
and your client relies upon you for that
type of advice
notwithstanding everything that i’ve
said some of my closest
clients and ones that i
consider having a personal relationship
now were celebrities that are the most
down-to-earth wonderful people that i’ve
ever met so it can also be
again such a rewarding experience where
you represent somebody that ostensibly
has a certain reputation
in public
and is their their
personal persona is so different
Los Angeles, CA family law attorney Lisa Helfend Meyer talks about her experience in handling high net-worth cases. She notes that her firm has recently handled a significant number of celebrity cases, which typically involve high-net-worth individuals. While early in her career these clients often had millions of dollars, she now handles cases involving clients with billions. These cases can be particularly complex due to the high stakes, the public visibility of the parties, and the challenges of managing strong personalities.
She explains that navigating celebrity cases requires experience not only with family law issues, such as spousal and child support, but also with the media. The presence of cameras, public spectators, and heightened media attention can affect courtroom dynamics, including the judge’s demeanor. She emphasizes the importance of having a seasoned attorney who understands how to manage both the legal and public relations aspects of such cases. She cites examples from recent high-profile litigation, such as the Johnny Depp and Amber Heard case, where statements outside of court—even in the media—can have serious legal repercussions. Attorneys must be extremely careful about what they say and advise their clients accordingly.
Despite the pressures and challenges, she finds celebrity cases can be deeply rewarding. Many of her closest clients, whom she has developed personal relationships with, are celebrities who are surprisingly down-to-earth and kind. Representing individuals whose public persona may differ greatly from their private selves offers a unique and fulfilling professional experience.
