Houston, TX personal injury lawyer Shane Kadlec tells the story of a memorable gun accident case he handled. He states that accidental gunshot injuries are far too common. About 20 years ago, he had his first opportunity to represent the family of a young man who had been shot, and over the years, this has become a specialized area of his practice. In representing families of gunshot victims, he has developed a network of both experts and advocates outside the courtroom.
He recognizes this as a serious issue in the country—every day, roughly 17 to 20 people are accidentally shot. His role is not to prosecute those who intentionally shoot, but to represent the families and victims of accidental shootings, which, unfortunately, happen all too often.
He recalls a tragic case involving a 15-year-old girl who was accidentally shot in the face by her best friend. A gun had been left out on a counter by an adult, and when one of the girls picked it up, it accidentally discharged, causing devastating results.
Shooting cases are a significant part of his work because he sees a real need to educate victims about the legal remedies available to them. Often, medical expenses from these incidents are extremely high, and helping clients manage those costs is a critical part of his mission.
