accidental gunshot injuries
00:07
are far far too common 20 years ago i
00:11
had my first
00:12
opportunity to represent a family of a
00:14
of a
00:15
young man who was shot and
00:18
over the years that has kind of become a
00:22
a niche part of my practice and in
00:25
representing
00:26
families of gunshot
00:30
victims i have developed sort of a
00:34
network
00:34
of both experts but also advocates
00:38
outside of the courtroom or legal arena
00:42
it really is an epidemic in this country
00:45
every day
00:46
i think 17 or 20 people are
00:49
accidentally shot in this country
00:53
so our role is to not prosecute
00:58
criminals who intentionally shoot people
01:01
but
01:02
represent the families and the victims
01:03
of people who are accidentally
01:05
shot and it happens all too
01:08
commonly unfortunately i had
01:12
a relative a 15 year old
01:16
girl who was accidentally shot by her
01:19
best friend
01:19
in the face it was a situation where a
01:22
gun was left
01:24
out on a counter by an adult and
01:27
uh these young ladies were were in the
01:31
room and one of them picked it up and it
01:32
accidentally went off and
01:34
and the results were were tragic so
01:37
shooting cases are
01:40
part of what i do because i really feel
01:44
there’s a need
01:45
for educating a the victims because most
01:48
people don’t even
01:49
think about this as a remedy that they
01:53
have
01:54
and oftentimes the the medical expenses
01:58
are are just very very high so anything
02:01
that we can do to help
02:03
our clients bear those costs i feel is
02:06
very important

Houston, TX personal injury lawyer Shane Kadlec tells the story of a memorable gun accident case he handled. He states that accidental gunshot injuries are far too common. About 20 years ago, he had his first opportunity to represent the family of a young man who had been shot, and over the years, this has become a specialized area of his practice. In representing families of gunshot victims, he has developed a network of both experts and advocates outside the courtroom.

He recognizes this as a serious issue in the country—every day, roughly 17 to 20 people are accidentally shot. His role is not to prosecute those who intentionally shoot, but to represent the families and victims of accidental shootings, which, unfortunately, happen all too often.

He recalls a tragic case involving a 15-year-old girl who was accidentally shot in the face by her best friend. A gun had been left out on a counter by an adult, and when one of the girls picked it up, it accidentally discharged, causing devastating results.

Shooting cases are a significant part of his work because he sees a real need to educate victims about the legal remedies available to them. Often, medical expenses from these incidents are extremely high, and helping clients manage those costs is a critical part of his mission.
