In the past we’ve had major issues affecting business. For example, our state used to have government insurance for worker’s compensation. We got a law passed that allowed all insurance companies to do business and sell worker’s compensation, and the benefit of that for our clients really is that not only can those of our clients who are insurance agents sell worker’s compensation, the price of worker’s compensation paid for by our business clients is less today than when that law passed almost 20 years ago. So, bringing in competition lowered the prices and that’s one of the things that really separates us – very few firms have this element of government affairs practice in their shop. So, we can go to Carson City, so we can go to our state legislature and we can change the laws in a way that makes a big difference for all of our clients and others.

Las Vegas, NV business law attorney James L. Wadhams talks about his firm’s success in getting laws changed for their clients. He recalls that in the past, the firm dealt with major issues impacting business. For example, the state used to have government-controlled workers’ compensation insurance. The firm helped get a law passed allowing all insurance companies to sell workers’ compensation.
The benefit for their clients was significant: not only could clients who were insurance agents now sell workers’ compensation, but the cost of coverage for business clients also dropped. Over nearly 20 years, competition lowered prices, which had a tangible impact on businesses. He emphasizes that this capability sets their firm apart—very few firms maintain a government affairs practice. With this expertise, they can go to Carson City or the state legislature and influence laws in ways that create meaningful benefits for all their clients.
