Given that federal charges are quite a
lot different, the system overall is
similar, but the sentencing guidelines
are different. The way judges react is
different. We deal with a whole
different group of attorneys in the US
attorney’s office. They are uh very
narrow-minded. They and that by that I
mean that they only focus on one topic
as a prosecutor. They’re not general.
they usually focus on internet crimes,
child pornography, crimes against
children, uh or drug crimes or gun
crimes. So, it’s very difficult
sometimes to overcome what they have.
But the relationship that I have with
the US attorneys is usually what ends
the case in a better way. Just being
able to speak with them about the case,
about the factors that help. You know,
admitting that, hey, you know what,
things didn’t go right every time, but
we need to focus on what’s positive in
my client’s mind. I could give an
example of one I had recently where a a
client took out $300,000 in fraudulent
PPP loans during COVID and the US
attorney and I had lots of discussions
about the case. Uh he ended up pleading
to a 20-year felony, but because of
everything I had te taught the uh US
attorney about my client, she didn’t
really get up at up there at sentencing
and make a huge deal about putting my
client in prison. She thought maybe okay
I can go a little lighter on this guy
and not go go go all the way and want
him to go to prison for 10 years. And it
ended up that he ended up getting
supervised release probation basically
as opposed to that because of the
rapport that I was thankfully able to
believe to build sorry with the
prosecutor US attorney
