a Target letter is a letter uh that a
United States Assistant Attorney in a
USA would send to someone that they are
considering investigating for a federal
crime and a Target letter means that the
US attorney’s office is usually
interested in talking to uh the person
about whatever crime they think the
person in is is is being
um investigated for uh at no point in
time should anyone go talk to the United
States attorney’s office uh without an
experienced federal attorney for many
reasons but uh very importantly if you
lie to a federal agent such as an FBI
agent a postal worker things of that
nature just lying or providing
misinformation can be the basis of a
criminal charge in federal court

Minneapolis, MN criminal defense attorney Ryan Garry talks about what you should do if you receive a target letter. He points out that a target letter is a formal notice issued by a United States Assistant Attorney to an individual under consideration for investigation in connection with a federal crime. Receiving such a letter typically indicates that the U.S. Attorney’s Office is interested in questioning the individual regarding the alleged offense under review. He emphasizes that no one should meet with the U.S. Attorney’s Office without the guidance of an experienced federal defense attorney. This is critical because providing false or misleading information to a federal agent—whether an FBI agent, postal inspector, or other federal official—can itself serve as the basis for a criminal charge in federal court.
