Well, at a sentencing hearing, what needs to happen is the defense lawyer needs to present mitigation, which is information that reduces a person’s
moral blameworthiness so a defense lawyer can argue for a lower sentence.
The person should also accept responsibility so the judge knows that they’re remorseful for what happened.
And then finally, of course, the the probably perhaps the most important part is the defense lawyer should incorporate all the information that’s been
presented and make the case and argue for a a reduced or lower sentence.
