well there are a lot of people that try
to use the Texas Attorney General to
collect child support and that is a
fantastic option if you don’t have any
funds and you don’t mind waiting a few
years to actually get something done the
AG’s office you know has a number of
lawyers and they have a whole lot of
different things that they need to look
at and unfortunately they’ve got you
know they’ve got hundreds of lawyers and
thousands of cases or maybe it’s
thousands of lawyers and tens of
thousands or hundreds of thousands of
cases so the problem is really one of
numbers they just don’t have the
manpower to be able to deal with that
now if you need to have a child support
reduction you know coming to a private
lawyer and explaining the situation hey
I lost my job I’ve been out of work for
you know X number a months or a year or
I just don’t make what what I what I
used to let’s say you had a job you were
making 120,000 and now you’re only
making 80 well you know that’s a
substantial hit when you’ve taken a
third of your income and and what you
should actually be paying so that’s
where a private lawyer can really be of
assistance in bringing that because it’s
going to happen a lot quicker you go to
the AG’s office it’s just not going to
happen as quickly and obviously if
you’re one of a thousand you’re gonna be
you know a much less of a priority than
going to someone that you’re actually
paying for their assistance

Dallas high-net-worth divorce attorney, Mark Scroggins, talks about how a lawyer can help you if your ex is not paying child support. He notes that many people try to rely on the Texas Attorney General’s office to handle child support collections. While it is a viable option, it tends to be slow, especially if the client has limited funds. The AG’s office has a finite number of lawyers managing thousands—or perhaps hundreds of thousands—of cases, so delays are inevitable. The sheer volume of cases means the system simply doesn’t have the manpower to move quickly.
For those seeking a child support reduction, he emphasizes that working with a private lawyer is usually far more efficient. For example, if someone loses their job or suffers a substantial income drop—say from $120,000 to $80,000 per year—a private attorney can help petition the court for a reduction more promptly than the AG’s office could. Paying a lawyer directly often ensures quicker attention and a more personalized approach, rather than being one of thousands waiting in line for the state to act.
